As Shiyun unlocked the doors to the Pourhouse, she noticed a flyer that had been unceremoniously glued on to the worn surface of the wooden entrance. “How rude,” she muttered as she ripped it off without a second glance, scowling as it left traces of the ugly yellow paper stuck behind. It was Equalist propaganda, the same one she had been seeing for a few weeks now spread around the neighborhood. She glanced down the street and noticed the same call to fight back against the repressors stuck haphazardly on all of the doors. Shaking her head, she balled up the piece of paper and walked inside to find something to scrub the doors clean. At least they had left the business alone, for the most parts. They were bound to show up sooner or later, she knew, given how crowded the bar got at times, but part of her hopped for the movement would die out long before they ever reached the Pourhouse. She didn’t want politics to come and ruin the usual festive atmosphere at the bar – the regulars came here to relax and to find some comfort at the bottom of their cups. If anyone tried to get in the way of that, Shiyun would not be happy.

Nevertheless, people liked to gossip in a bar, and it was becoming harder and harder to avoid talking about the Equalists. Some of her favorite customers were her closest friends, and they knew her little secret, that she was a water bender – sometimes one of them would look at her with concern when a touchy topic like that came up, when some idiot would think that it was a good idea to begin bashing on the benders with drunken bravado. At least they were usually put back in their place rather quickly, as a number of benders also frequented the Pourhouse.

But change was coming soon, whether any of them wanted it or not.
